Peter Dorr

AUSTIN D KNIGHT

We are looking for a photo or portrait of the coastal schooner  AUSTIN D KNIGHT.  She was bulit in Camden Maine  in 1884, at the old Issac Coombs Shipyards, known as  Coombs & Company.

The schooner was named after a banker  Austin D Knight of Hallowell Maine. It seems he was Judge as well.  He died March 27, 1911.

Has anyone heard of  the schooner  or  Austin D Knight.

There are a profile and portrait of Judge Knight in the Illustrated History of Kennebec County, pages 512-513:

There seems to have been a connection between Austin Knight and Isaac Coombs. The History of Camden and Rockport says that Knight built "several vessels" with Isaac Decrow, who later was the partner of Capt Coombs:

I was just on that site on with that passage in the book.
Just read your reply to a woman concerning the price of copies in Keneebec Probate Court. Is it true $90. I was going to get a copy of Austin D Knight's will

The price would probably depend on the number of pages in the probate file. If the decedent had a large estate, you would expect a larger file, and a higher price for a copy.

What do you know of Capt Ephraim Perry of Hallowell Maine. on page 512 it is mentioned this was Austin D Knight's sister.

I notice that they named one of their children "Austin Knight Perry."

My father, Jim stevens, compiled a list with  photographs when possible/available of every schooner built in Maine. He also did research on the history of the vessels We gave his entire collection to The Maine State Library in Augusta. You may well find your schooner there. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply.   I found this article a while back.  My great uncle, Austin Knight Sturgis was named after the schooner by his father Capt Julius C Sturgis.

Just woundering.... You live in N.C.   Julius C Sturgis lived in North Carolina with his father Capt Frank Sturgis. I am looking for the birth etc.  Do you have any ideas or thoughts
