I would guess that he was the son of William and Anna Cunningham. Notice that in the 1880 census, Oscar Thomas (38, b. Vermont) and his wife Annie (53, b. Me.) are enumerated just before Bertram and Alice's household. In the 1870 census of Jefferson, I find Oscar Thomas (30, b. Vt.), Annie (42, b. Me.), and children Freddie (21, b. Me.), Bertram (19, b. Me.) and Edward (17, b. Me.). These children are listed as Thomases, but it's unlikely that Oscar was their father, given his age. More likely is that they were Annie's children by a previous husband.

In the 1850 census of Jefferson I find William Cunningham (25, b. Me.), Anna (25, b. Me.), and Fredrick (2, b. Me.). I haven't found Anna and the children in the 1860 census.

This is very helpful Thank you for your help - I did find bertram & Alice's census but just could not find any indication who/where his father/mother was

Hi Elaine, I have some info for you.  Bertram's parents were William Cunningham and Annie Sears.  William's father and mother's names are Samuel (b. 1805) and Eliza Cunningham of Jefferson.  His wife's name is Alice and their children's names are William, Ernest, Arthur, Iva, and Percy. 

I am a descendent of Samuel as well from his son Robert (b. 1830) who would be William's brother.  Now Samuel's father and mother are Samuel (b. 1760) and Eunice Day.  However, this is where I am stuck and am trying to find out who this Samuel's parentage is.

If you click on the link for one of these Cunningham's you can click on the left side for all Cunningham's in the Lincoln area I believe you will find more of them in the area.
