The 1850 census gives his name as "John Hill 3d." There was another John Hill then living in Augusta who had a son also named John, so the "3d" might have been added simply to distinguish him from "John Sr." and "John Jr."
The 1860 and 1870 censuses for Augusta give Sarah's middle initial as "M." so it's possible that they are the John Hill and Sarah M. Whittier whose marriage was recorded 1826 in Readfield. There was reportedly a John Hill born in Readfield 1 Sept. 1799 to Jeptha and Rachel (Savage) Hill. The 1880 census for Brunswick gives John's age as 81, so a 1799 birthdate is possible.
