Hello everyone, this photo I believe came from Maine. It appears to be a copy of a tintype from its size. Would anyone care to give their opinion on the time frame and whether or not Indian women? from the dress. Man and woman, two women ?? Thank you, Ron
Yeah, I was hoping that someone with more knowledge than I do of Native American dress and hairstyles would jump in and offer an opinion. It is a fascinating photograph.

Chris, It was in my grandfathers "box", have a few photos that I can identify,,,,and many I can't,, they came from Maine, there's a reason for it being there., just don't know why,,,I thought that it kinda tied in with the forum post about women last names not being recorded, it's too bad more people don't respond to a post,,,,, there's not much I can do in Mich., but I do read every post and do spend time on some that I think I can help,,,,maybe in the future,

Ward, the other photos don't pertain to this discussion, to add to your question, my grandfather was never in Maine to my knowledge, his grandfather died there in 1855, in Corinna if my memory serves me right, do you have an opinion on the photo submitted,,,,
Corinna's only 30 miles or so from the Penobscot Indian Island Reservation . The Penobscot Nation Museum might be able to tell you something about the photo.

Well I was trying to develop one...I was hoping the area of Maine would have a Native population that we could identify. I don't know of any prominent ones from the Corinna area...So my opinion is these are not Native Americans from Maine.
Sorry, I couldn't be more help

Ward, you're being alot of help. And I thank you for it, by saying they are not Native Americans from Maine , do you mean they are White or they look like Native Americans, just not from Maine,,Thanks again, Ron

I would think they are native but that is just an impression I get. It's not based on any thing.
Following Chris's information I looked at a lot of old pictures of Maine natives.
Unfortunately it seems most old pics are of "formal" dress and don't show a more everyday look that your pic has (IMO).
I think the answer is in the box...

Debbie, THANK YOU for the lead, I will pursue it. All I'm looking for is an opinion, and would appreciate yours, mine is that they are Native Americans, from what region, I don't know. And, no doubt never will. I'm thinking 1840 to 1850. Thanks again Debbie,,, Ron
