Indexing Project (Batch) Numbers
I have a Maine marriage with the number M50338-2. I know the data is correct. The bride is Elizabeth Allen. I also have a birth record number M50338-1. The child is Betsey Allen and the parents are Elijah Allen and Merriam Porter. The source film on both is 10917. Is it likely that Betsey and Elizabeth are the same person based on the proximity of the record numbers? The birth and marriage both took place in Freeport.

No, I don't think you can assume that. A batch number generally covered a town's entire collection of births or marriages (birth batches begin with C, marriage batches with M). All the batch number will tell you is which batch of records on the given source film the record was extracted from.
