Searching Annie M. True b. c.1845 Oxford County, perhaps Dixfield (on death cert.) but I can find no reference to her until her marriage and birth of my grandmother Bertha Tilton in MA in1880. Above cert. says her father Thomas True b. in England. Grateful for any ideas on how to pursue this problem.

Annie M. True married Oscar K Tilton in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1872. The Massachusetts Archives Index says this is recorded in Microfilm Volume 244 Page 218 of the Vital Records. If you can get close to a copy of that vital record (not just the index), it will also provide you with the parents names, and her birthplace. The records are at UMass Boston ... but copies also exist in the Manchester, NH American Canadian Genealogical Society. I'm sure there are other copies, elsewhere, too.

It looks as if Oscar K Tilton was born in Haverhill in 1851 (Vol 51 Pg 164)

You can search this information here : http://www.sec.state.ma.us/vitalrecordssearch/VitalRecordsSearch.aspx
Thank you for your reply Michael. I do have the marriage record which gives Oscar's info but for Annie it just has her name and Maine as birth place, no parents listed. It also checks marriage for her as first but she had a dau. in 1862 named Nettie. Nettie's dau. told me, when in her 90's, that her mother was married to a man named Clayton.
Not found any evidence of that. Nett is on the 1880 census with the Tiltons in Haverhill MA as Annetta. Annie died 6 March 1913 in Atkinson NH. Yes, Oscar Kipp Tilton was b. 14 April 1851 in Haverhill. His father John was b. in Anover NH 1814 and did marry Joanna Q. Wells of Chester NH on 10 April 1843. Are you researching the Tiltons?
>>> Are you researching the Tiltons?

Nope ...

It's just that the Mass Archives Index is quick and easy.

I was surprised to find the Haverhill Vital Records on line.
It appears the Tilton family is from Haverhill ... you may already have this info ... But, I found the Haverhill Vital Records at this web site ... ends just before the birth of Oscar ... but his parents married in 1843, I think.

Hi - wondering if you are still on this site and still searching! I've found information on several Annie True's born that year. Would she happen to have been born in in Maine? Do you have any idea who her parent's were - that could help narrow the search for me. Just let me know if you are still looking!
Sarah
Hi Sarah
Yes, still searching, can't give up. The death cert. and census rec. all say she was born in Maine. On Haverhill census where she is mother of my g-mother it says her father(maybe Thomas) was b. in England and mother in Maine. That is all I know unfortunately. Her b. date could be a 1844-5-6, not sure. Thank you so much for your input.
Mary
Annie married 03 July 1872 at Haverhill, Essex County, MA to Oscar K. Tilton. Bertha Alice Tilton was born at Haverhill, 16 April 1880. This birth records states Annie was bobrn in Dixfield. It would probably pay to flesh out the whole family . . . birth and death records of all their children, or even siblings of Annie if you know of any. I can do MA look ups.
Did some research and found an 1880 Census from Haverhill Essex Mass Ward Two that listed His Family, His Mother was living with him at that time, her name Is Josephine Tilton born 1817, Oscar K Tilton born 1851 Plaistow NH and he married Annie M True In 1872 Haverhill Mass she was born 1846 Maine, Children Listed are Bertha Alice Tilton born 16 Apr 1880 Haverhill Mass, Annaetta Tilton born 1862 New Hampshire, George O Tilton born 1864 New Hampshire. Also found Listed on other Census Sheets that Josephine Tilton Married to a John Tilton no date on him.
Thank you Carl for your message. I do have that 1880 c. Annaetta (Nettie) my g-mothers half sister m. first,Geo. Gordon of Lowell Ma. her parents listed as William and Annie Clayton but I cannot find them or their marriage to find Annie's parents. Also "Josephine" is actually Johanna Q Wells b. 7 Jan 1817 who m. John Tilton 10 April 1843 in Haverhill MA. So still looking for Annie True Clayton Tilton!!
Hello Marsha.......I know nothing about Annie's parents or siblings. I know she had a dau. Nettie Clayton (1862-1957). Nettie
married George Gordon in 1881 and he died in 1882. On the marriage record her parents are just listed as William and Annie and that she was born in NH. I cannot find record of them which might lead to Annie's family. Nettie then m. Fred Richardson of Haverhill MA and had four children none of whom married. The Richardsons all buried in Linwood Cem. Haverhill.
I wonder if Annaetta (Nettie) is the "Amitha" Clayton, aged 9, living in Hampstead, N. H., in 1870 with William and Rose Ann Clayton (both old enough to be her grandparents). The 1860 census for Hampstead indicates that William "Claton" was born in Yorkshire, England. Living with him and wife Rosanna in that year was William H. Clayton, aged 17, a shoemaker. The 1850 census for Hampstead calls him "William jr" and says he was born in Vermont.

It appears that the younger William served in the Army, and died soon after the Civil War. This entry is from page 1038 of Revised register of the soldiers and sailors of New Hampshire in the War of the Rebellion, 1861-1866:

Clayton, William H. Co. C, 12 Mass. Inf.; b. Hampstead; age 19; res. Hampstead; enl. July 5, '61, for 3 yrs.; must. in July 5, '61, as Priv.; tr. to Co. H, 6 V. R. C., Mar. 16, '64; disch. July 6, '64, Washington D. C., tm. ex. [term expired] Died Aug. 30, '65.

Harriette Eliza Noyes' Memorial of the town of Hampstead, New Hampshire says that William Clayton, Civil War soldier, is buried in the "'Ray' Cemetery at District No. 7."

Hampstead is not far from Haverhill, Mass., which would explain how Annie and Nettie ended up in that city. If William's widow or child collected a Civil War pension, the file might confirm his identity as Nettie's father.
Hi Chris,
I have posted many queries but never had such great results as Maine Genealogy. What a group of knowlegable helpful people! I appreciate it all so much.
Amitha sounds like a possibility. I shall search for pension as you suggest. I did contact the Town Clerk in Hampstead as Nettie's obit mentions she was born there but she could not find anything regarding Nettie Clayton. Nettie d. 1957 @96. Her dau. told me years ago that her mother had married a Mr. Clayton before marrying her father Fred Richardson. I can find no Annie True in Maine b. around 1845 or a Thomas True from England. Perhaps it was the Clayton that was from England.
