New book -- Lives of Consequence: Blacks in Early Kittery and Berwick in the Massachusetts Province of Maine. Author: Patricia Q. Wall.

,Dear fellow family researchers,

Results of my six years of searching for early Blacks (including Africans, a few Indians and persons of mixed African, white or Indian heritage  (enslaved and some free) in the old Parish of Kittery, Maine, was published August, 2017 by the Portsmouth Marine Society of the Portsmouth Historical Society, Portsmouth, NH.

Chapter Ten of this book includes documentation on about 500+  Blacks with or without surnames or under generic terms; also notations on 186 slave owners and about 60 other whites who may have been slave owners. Due to the nature of documentation (explained in the book), the findings on Black persons sometimes leaves more questions than answers.  However, full data was given in hopes that at least some of the findings would prove useful to researchers.

Thank you, Patricia! I can only imagine how difficult it was to assemble the stories of these men and women from such scanty evidence. Here's a link to purchase the book.
