My g.g. grandfather, b. 1840, Carmel, Me., d.1919, Dixmont, Me. I know his father was William, but I can't seem to get any further back than that. Any clues, greatly appreciated.

The History of Penobscot County says that William was the son of William Harris of Clinton, but this appears to be incorrect. I can find no record of a William Harris from Clinton settling in Dixmont.

William's birth on 4 April 1802 was recorded in Dixmont town records. A William Harris, son of Stephen and Mary Harris, was born the same day in Portland. This also matches the date on William of Dixmont's gravestone.

I believe that William's parents were Stephen and Mary (Knight) Harris, who married 31 Jan. 1802 in Portland. According to the death record of one of their daughters, Stephen was a hatter from Boston. A deed found here (book 88, page 343), suggests that Mary was the daughter of Benjamin Knight of Portland. This appears to be Mary Harris in 1850.

Thanks for that info. I have the same about William being born in Portland, and his parents being Stephen and Mary (tho I had her maiden name as Angier, with a question mark.) I will dig into the History of Penobscot County, see if I can answer some questions about William's wife, and the lineage further back. Again, thanks.
