Hi, Im a direct descendant of Thomas Hanscom, one of the early settlers of Kittery (1650). I have many prerevolutionary ancestors. Some of the names are Hanscom, Merrill, Kneeland, House, Thurlow, Staples, Libby, Gowell and Downing. Anyone here related to Kittery history also? Im especially interested in the section that is now Eliot.

Hi,  Looking for info on the Gowen/Smith line -- understand there was a change of name by part of the family, from Gowen to Smith.  And this goes into the line from William Gowen from Scotland.  Any info would be appreciated!!

I have been posting an extensive tree in Ancestry.com based primarily on the descendants of William Gowen - my user name is ralphgowen and if you have an account you should be able to see - if not let me know...  if you have a particular question I may be able to help there too...

Hi,  I'm working on the Smith/Gowen line.   We're not sure if we go back to William Alexander Gowen through Nicholas or John.   We go to William Smith/maybe Gowen born 1756 in Pepperellborough, m Mary Eliza BOULTER.  Then to his son John, b 1784, m Rebecca Hill, then to Thomas Hlll Smith, b 1817,m 3 times, 3rd wife Sara PORTER is my great grandmother.

William is presumed to be son of George Smith, b 1732. not sure of wife's name.  There is one thought that we go back to the Gowens, and the name changed.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

The names you mention don't tie into my tree - I'm descended from both Nicholas and John - via the Jane-William cousin marriage... and both of those lines are very well documented in my tree - please take a look in ancestry and look at my tree (ralphgowen) and see if your people tie in somewhere - some folks used the name interchangeably in the early days it appears.

I grew up with Thurlows in Portland.  Richard Thurlow m my friend Virginia and moved to California.  If you want more info let me know...Nancy :)
Hi Wayne, Thomas Hanscom & Gowells are distant relatives of mine...My direct ancestors from Kittery are John Brooks b. 1668 (many of his descendants lived in Eliot; Daniel Langdon, Alfred Langdon, Abraham), Peter Staples b.1640, Christian Remick b. 1631 (Eliot). They seemed to congregate in South Eliot, otherwise known as "Eliot Neck". If you have any relation to the Remicks, the monument to Christian Remick is located just off the road going through Eliot Neck by the river, and there is a living relative of his very nearby.

Hi Paula,

I am descended from Thomas Hanscom and Christian Remick and Gowell.  Are you on Ancestry.com?

Charlotte
