I think he was born in Poland, Maine (from 1850 & 1860 census of the town). He lived in Gray (1870 census) and later New Gloucester, Maine (1880 and 1900 census), and is buried in Gray Cemetery. He was married at least twice (Hannah Tripp & Eliza J). I have some census and marriage records, but I'm missing information for him, so if you might have any to share, or if you'd like any more info from me, please drop me a line.

I saw this photo on ebay which I am adding here. Imagine my surprise when I saw the same fellow on here. Have you done much research on him. It must be quite the story. Incredible images. Thank you for sharing.

Sadly, I don't have much information other than what I've found in online records, and not many photos either. Here's another of Chas with his grandson (my grandfather) and his great-granddaughters (my aunts), taken 1931.

Thank you so much for sharing this, this is an amazing find for my collection! Would you happen to have the link to the listing (or is it long gone)?

Thanks again,

Jim

Have you sent for his pension records and service record from the National Archives? If not according to his Pension index card he applied for a pension June 14th 1869 Application # 144.638 Certificate # 100.395
Also the lists his service as Company C 31st and Company C 32nd Maine Infantry. Was your great great grandfather of Maine Indian heritage? He looks so much like a friend of mine this is from the Maliseet tribe. You are so fortunate to have these wonderful photos of him. He looks so young in his Civil War photos. I wonder who his friend was? They look like real buddys. I just fell in love with that photo of the two of them. I will search my emails for the ebay listing because I think I bid on it. Thank you for sharing again. I would love to know the rest of his story as I am sure you would.

No, I haven't taken the time yet to search his service records, but thank you very much for the information - that will make the task much easier! I'm still trying to figure out how many marriages he had and how many children (so far, 2 marriages with 11 children). He is half Indian, but I'm not sure which tribe or which parent. Everyone in my descendant line that knew any information is long gone. I'm sure a have dozens of cousins out there with all the answers... somewhere. Thanks for checking on the listing, I may try to track down the current owner if at all possible to see if they're willing to part with it. At least I have the picture you sent - thanks again!

I looked back through my emails for the listing but it no longer there. :-( It did show that the final price on the photo was $415.00 Below is a link to someone who might be able to help you with finding which tribe he came from. I had talke with her in the past about some soldiers in the 7th Maine that were from the Penobscot tribe. You can now order service and pension records online from the National Archives. Do you have any of his Civil War letters? I was just curious. I have 12 letters from one of my great-grandfathers but no photos unfortunately.
If you ever do track down more information I would love to hear about it. I am sure there is a great story there. The photo of him and his friend is one of the best I have ever seen. I hope all goes well with your search. Bobbie:-)

Thanks very much for this info and link, I have a feeling it'll come in handy as my research grows. Too bad about the photo. But if I did have it, it would just sit on a shelf or in a box anyway. The picture of it you sent is great - I've already shared it with everyone in the family and it's a big hit.

I have a few things I could email you both if you would like regarding Charles and his family. Curiousity got the better of me and I went hunting. I love researching and I just think Charles's story is so fascinating. I have Shaun's email but I need yours James. I am so glad you posted the photo of Charles in his uniform. I might have never know who he was and I was so curious about the photo.
