Nortons of York County ME

Thanks to a member of  Maine Genealogy Net, Jean P,   I might have found out why I can find no information on my 4th GGrandfather Nathaniel Norton's parents. Nathaniel was  b. 1 Aug 1762 in Sanford, ME according to Rev War records. He married Hannah Sawyer and  all but one of their children stayed in Maine. Their son, Reuben, is my ancestor and the only one who left ME.

Jean located a York County court record for Abigail Norton who was fined for having a child out of wedlock…

My roots are deep in York County as well....Day, Littlefield, Pendexter, Wormwood, Garey/Gerry, Durgin, Boothby and so many more.  If you would like some photos of the area they settled I'll be happy to take a walk in the woods when the snow all melts...in about 2 months!!  If there is anything I could check out for you that you haven't already found in print then just yell.  Jean

Hi Nancy,

I am not familiar with any of the Norton names that you mentioned.  But, there is a Norton reunion each year (or at least there was) at the Madame Nordica (Lillian Norton) homestead in Farmington, ME.  I attended it once in the early 2000's at which time I had not yet found who my Norton ancestor was.  I was just going on memories of my grandmother telling me that I was related to Madame Nordica, a famous opera singer in the early 1900's whose real name was Lillian Norton.  It turns out that we have common ancestors and are cousins about 8 x removed.  If I run across the names of your family members, I will let you know.

Hi Nancy,

In the Norton line, I go back to Nicholas Norton b. 1610, England, d. 1676, Edgartown, MA and his wife, Elizabeth Isaac, d. 1690 Edgartown, MA and then through three of their children, Benjamin, Ruth and Joseph.  But, my closest Norton ancestor was Delia W. Norton, b. 1822, Addison, ME, d. 1875 in Addison, ME, m. Jospeh T. Thompson, b. 1809, Jonesboro, Washington, ME

Hi Nancy:

My mom had an anunt Georgia married to a Ralph Sawyer of Saco, Maine, York County. Georgia was a Milliken. They had one child that died, I believe, at birth or soon after. Georgia is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco, Maine. I do not know where Ralph Sawyer is buried. Don't know if this is information you can use or not.
