Ellen,
When I get home this summer (I live in the Virgin Islands 8 months a year) I can maybe help with your inquiries. The Leighton's came from Kittery in the 1600's Stackpoles Old Kittery and her families is available thru google books online. It will have a few pages on the Leighton's I do alot of research in the Fall at the Maine History library in Portland . You can contact them online they have a website.....they will do limited lookups I believe.the Head Librarian is Nick Noyes you can mention my name if you want. He has assistants Bill and Jamie who might help as well. Merrill is also a big name in Portland and if I am not mistaken a Merrill sits on the board of MHL (Maine History Library) They have the largest holdings in the state and I am sure they have more than one Merrill and Leighton genealogy in their holdings.
