Francina Ann Spearin[1] was born in Palmyra, Maine, the daughter of Reuben S. Spearin[2] and Sarah B. Whiting[3].  Reuben Spearin and Sarah Whiting were probably married about 1835 in Maine.  They had two children: Francina A. Spearin and Pauline or Paulina M. Spearin[4].

Reuben S. Spearin, born in Clinton, Maine was the youngest child of John Spearin, Jr.[5] and Mary Kendall[6] who were married on November 4, 1784 in Clinton and had ten children, all born there: Lydia Spearin[7], who married Joseph Bowley[8] about 1806; John Spearin[9]; Elizabeth "Betsey" Spearin[10]; Uriah Spearin[11]; Sarah Spearin[12], who married James Pratt[13] on October 28, 1817 in Clinton and later moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota; William Kendall Spearin[14], Melinda Spearin[15]; Rhoda Spearin[16], who married on November 17, 1825 to George W. Littlefield[17] in Frankfort, Maine; Mary Spearin[18] and Reuben Spearin.

Reuben Spearin, age 30-40, was a resident of Palmyra during the 1840 Census. He is living in the household with a female age 20-30 (inaccurate recording) and two daughters under the age of 5.  Although their names are not listed, Sarah age 35, Francina, age 4 and Paulina, younger than 1 year, would align very closely with these statistics.

Reuben Spearin either died or left Maine between 1840 and 1844 because his widow, Sarah B. Whiting married Alden Bradford Ellis[19] in about 1845 and they had a son born later that year.  Reuben Spearin has a marker which reads 1808-   in the John Spearin, Jr. Lot at Fuller's Corner Cemetery in Hartland, Maine.  No date of death is recorded.

In the 1850 Census, Francina A. Ellis (incorrect last name), age 14, and her sister, Paulina M. Ellis (also incorrect) age 10, are in the household of Alden B. Ellis, age 28 their step-father and Sarah B. Ellis, age 35 in Garland, Maine.  Also living there are Francina's younger half-siblings, John Q. A. Ellis, age 4 and Abby F. Ellis, age 2.

Francena [sic] A. Shearin, age 23 is in Garland in the 1860 Census with Alden B. and Sarah B. Ellis.  Francina Ann Spearin has many identities and is known as 'Francina Ann Sims, born in Garland' on the marriage certificate of her oldest son Seth L. Whiting[20] to Vidella (Cook)[21] Hunt in 1899.  She is known as 'Francina A. Shearing, deceased, born in Harmon' for Seth L. Whiting's second marriage to Mrs. Lucinda T. Stinneford[22] in 1913.

Francina would be recorded as 'Fancina Spearin' by her son Fred A. Whiting, who would marry his employer Mary Patten[23] on June 27th 1900, the day after the Census was taken in Pittsfield Town, Maine.  In 1917, Francina Spearin is known as 'Frances Ellis' at the marriage of another son, Algie B. Whiting[24] to Lucy E. Withee[25].

In the 1850 Census, Francina's sister, Paulina's last name was recorded as Ellis. Paulina M. Spearin, age 17, was married in Exeter, Maine on November 29, 1857 to Paul Towle[26], age 49.  Paul and Paulina Towle would be married for more than 25 years, until Paul's death.

The daughter of Paul Towle and Paulina M. Spearin, Nora Lena Towle[27] was their only child.  Nora L. Towle would marry at age 14 on December 18, 1881 in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine to her 29-year-old second cousin, Herbert Bryce Whiting[28].  Nora L. Towle and Herbert B. Whiting shared a set of great-grandparents: Lt. John Whiting and Margaret Fairbrother, who were the parents of Sarah B. Whiting.

In 1900, in East and West Bear River Townships Wheatland Town, Yuba, California, Paulina Woodruff, born January 1846 (should be 1840), age 54 (age 60 really) and widowed, married for 14 years, lives with her daughter Mrs. Nora Whiting, age 33 and Herb Whiting 43, all born in Maine. Alene Whiting, age 16 and Vivian Whiting, age 3, both born in California, are Herb and Nora Whiting’s daughters.

Sarah B. Whiting, born in Hartland, was the daughter of Lt. John Whiting[29] and Margaret Fairbrother[30].  Lt. John Whiting was born in Billerica, Massachusetts and had served during the Revolutionary War from 1775-1783.  He moved to Hartland sometime after 1800.

John Whiting and Margaret Fairbrother were married on January 1, 1805 in Norridgewock, Maine and had eight children, all born in Hartland: Nancy Whiting[31], Leonard Whiting[32], Lucy Whiting[33], Brice or Bryce McLellan Whiting[34], Sarah B. Whiting, Betsey Whiting[35], John Whiting[36] and Benjamin French Whiting[37].

Sarah B. Whiting and her second husband, Alden B. Ellis were probably married in Garland. They had four children: John Quincy Adams Ellis[38], Abbie F. Ellis[39], Edward M. Ellis[40] and Horatio Boynton Ellis[41].  Sarah B. Whiting and Alden B. Ellis are first cousins, once removed because they share common ancestors Lovell Fairbrother[42] and Catherine Howe[43].  Lovell and Catherine Fairbrother are Sarah B. Whiting's grandparents and Alden B. Ellis' great-grandparents.

By 1870, Sarah B. Whiting, age 55 and Alden B. Ellis, age 48 had separated and she was living with her sons John Q. A. Ellis, age 25 and Edward M. Ellis, age 19 in Garland.

In 1880 in Dover, Maine, Sarah B. Ellis, age 65, is living with her daughter Paulina Towle, age 39.  The head of household is Paulina's husband, Paul Towle age 75, a step-daughter of Paul Towle, Matilda Hutchins[44], age 39 is also living there.  Matilda is the daughter of Matilda Emily Philbrook[45], Paul Towle's second wife, who he married on June 27, 1845.  The younger Matilda is also known as Matilda Emily Hutchins, Hutchinson or Hutchings.

Sarah B. (Whiting) Spearin Ellis, died at age 66 years 3 months and is buried in Hathaway Cemetery in Garland as wife of Alden B. Ellis.  The inscription reads: "Poor weary hands at rest at last, All sorrows cares and trials past, Sleep mother dear til Christ shall come, Then may we meet in that bright home."  Daughter of Sarah B. Whiting and Alden B. Ellis, Abby F. Ellis died at age 20.  Abby is buried with her mother.

Alden Bradford Ellis was born on Brighton Plantation, Maine.  He was the oldest child of Freeborn Ellis[46] and Eunice Withee[47], who were married on March 14, 1820 in Norridgewock, Maine. Freeborn Ellis and Eunice Withee were first cousins, sharing the same set of grandparents, Lovell Fairbrother and Catherine Howe, who lived to 100 years of age.

Freeborn and Eunice Ellis had nine children between 1822 and 1847.  Alden B. Ellis, Elizabeth W. Ellis[48], Josiah Ellis[49], Elbridge G. Ellis[50], Joseph M. Ellis[51], Alonso F. Ellis[52],Lydia T. Ellis[53], Mary A. Ellis[54] and Laura A. Ellis[55], who married Israel D. Kimball[56].  Sometime before 1850, Freeborn Ellis, Eunice and some of their children moved to Milford, Massachusetts.  Freeborn Ellis died there of "Typhoid Fever" at age 64.  His wife Eunice (Withee) Ellis returned to Maine after 1870 and died in Garland at age 82.

In 1880 residing just a few doors away from Ephraim and Francina (Spearin) Whiting are Alden B. Ellis's mother, Eunice Ellis, a 78-year-old widow, living with her daughter Lizzie M. Davis[57], age 52, also widowed, in Garland.  Lizzie's husband, Horace Davis[58] had died in Fitchburg, Massachusetts at age 51 of "Inflammation of Bowels".

Alden B. Ellis served during the Civil War, enlisting at Garland on September 10, 1862. He was mustered out on October 10, 1862.  His service card describes him as 40 years old, 5' 10-1/2" tall, with a dark complexion, black hair and blue eyes.  Alden Ellis was a Private in the Union Army with Company "H" in 22nd Regiment of the Maine Infantry.  He was taken prisoner in June of 1863.  Alden Ellis was discharged in September 1863, after a year of service.

Alden B. Ellis, has remarried to Sarah F. Hodgton[59].  In 1870 they are living in Orland, Maine with their 6-year-old son Abram W. Ellis[60].  In 1880, now living in Bangor, Maine are Alden B. Ellis, age 58, his wife Sarah, age 39 and their children Abram W. Ellis, age 16, Annie L. Ellis[61] , age 7 and Henry M. Hodgton.  She filed for his Military Pension on March 12, 1912.  She only collected the pension for slightly more than a year.  Sarah F. (Hodgton) Ellis died in Brighton of "Cirrhosis of Liver".  She was 72.

Son of Sarah B. Whiting and Alden B. Ellis, Edward M. Ellis married Jane "Jennie" E. Merrill[63] on August 31, 1873 in Atkinson, Maine.  Jennie Merrill was born in Parkman, Maine and died in Garland.  Edward M. Ellis died in Garland.  Daughter of Edward and Jane was Evelyn A. Ellis[64], who married Walter N. Reed[65] on February 5, 1902 in Garland.

Son of Sarah B. Whiting and Alden B. Ellis, Horatio Boynton Ellis married Sadie Adella "Dell" Stinneford[66] on September 1, 1874 in Dover.  After Sadie's death, Horatio Ellis married Vesta Burbank Jepson[67] on December 7, 1889 in Dover.  Vesta was a widow, who had previously been married on November 4, 1877 to Frank Alton Stevens[68]. Frank Stevens had died in 1888 leaving his wife Vesta with four young children. Vesta Stevens was also pregnant with her fifth child, a girl, who was born a few months after Frank Steven's death.

Horatio Ellis and Vesta Jepson divorced in the summer of 1900 and Horatio married for a third time to Etta C. Reynolds[69] on October 28, 1900 in Garland.  Horatio gives his mother's name as Sarah B. Whiting, deceased, father as Alden B. Ellis, a farmer in Bangor.

Cynthia E. (or Cynthia B.) Reynolds married Joseph E. Reynolds[70] on January 2, 1865 in Troy, Maine. In 1870, in Corinth, Maine they are known as Joseph E. Reynolds, age 25 and Cynthia Reynolds, age 22. They had five children before 1880 where they are enumerated as Joseph E. and Etta C. Raynolds in Garland.

Etta C. Reynolds, at age 44 married Owen J. Ryan[71], age 31 on November 6, 1895 in Old Town, Maine.  It was a second marriage for both.  After her divorce from Horatio, Etta C. Ellis, age 54, married John F. Sheehan, age 49 on November 30, 1905 in Dexter, Maine. Etta gives her father’s name as Russell Reynolds and her mother as Etta Huff.  She claims that this is her second marriage, but it is actually her fourth.

On June 5, 1920, she marries for a fifth time as Etta Sheean [sic], age 69, to William Gilbert, age 56 in Pittsfield, Maine where she was also known as Etta C.           After the Census on June 11, 1860, Francina Ann Spearin married her first cousin Ephraim E. Whiting[72] and they had five sons born in Garland: Seth L. Whiting, Olie, Otrie or Otis E. Whiting[73], George W. Whiting[74], Algie B. Whiting and Fred Augustus Whiting[75].

The Whiting family is still living in Garland in 1870, where Ephraim, age 30 is a farmer with slightly less than     $1,000 worth of property and personal assets. On February 25, 1871 Ephraim Whiting purchased 160 Acres of land in Garland from Charles Shaw of Dexter for $600. The parcel is known as Lot 2 in the 11th Range of Garland.

On April 10, 1877 Ephraim and Francina A. Whiting obtained a mortgage against the same parcel for $250 from Caleb O. Palmer, with the agreement to repay the loan in one year with a 12% interest rate.

During the 1880 Census in Garland, Francina is enumerated as Francisca A. Whiting, age 43 with her husband Ephraim Whiting, age 40 and their five sons, ages 3 to 18. On November 12, 1881, Francina and Ephraim obtained another mortgage from Maria L. Preble for the amount of $400 to be repaid in four years at 6% interest annually.

Francina Ann (Spearin) Whiting died in Garland at age 46 years, 9 months and 9 days old and is interred at Pine Grove Cemetery in Dover-Foxcroft with her husband Ephraim E. Whiting.

Ephraim E. Whiting, born in Hartland, was the youngest child of Leonard Whiting[76] and Hannah Dyer[77], who were married about 1828 and had five other children: James Dyer Whiting[78]; Hannah Dyer Whiting[79], who married William B.           Ephraim's father, Leonard Whiting and Francina Ann Spearin's mother Sarah B. (Whiting) were siblings.

Ephraim Whiting was only ten years old when his mother Hanna died and is the only one of his brothers to stay in Maine.  His brothers James, Leonard and Silas followed their father Leonard to California.

In 1888, five years after Francina's death, Ephraim E. Whiting was married to Lucy Burrill[85].  Lucy Margaret Burrill, born in Dover, was the daughter of Isaiah Crooker Burrill[86] and Harriet Bean[87], who were married on May 4, 1837 and had five children: Newell Egery Burrill[88], Sylvia Bean Burrill[89], Lucy Margaret Burrill, Ivory Oakes Burrill[90] and Isaiah Crooker Burrill[91].
