Emeline Smart[1] was born in Athens, Maine, the youngest child of John Sylvester Smart[2] and his second wife Emeline Berry[3], who were married on September 15, 1878 by Clergyman Daniel Davis. John S. Smart and Emeline Berry were first cousins. Their mothers, Betsey (Tuttle) Smart and Cynthia (Tuttle) Berry were sisters.

John S. Smart had previously been married to another first cousin, Julia A. Tuttle[4] on August 20, 1869 in Brighton, Maine. It appears that they had a daughter Henrietta "Etta" Smart[5] who was born in Brighton about four years before their marriage, when Julia A. Tuttle was 15.

In the 1870 Census in Brighton, Henrietta Smart's birth year is given in error as 1860 and her mother Julia's as in 1850, which is correct. They are living with Julia's older brothers, James Tuttle[6] and Israel Tuttle[7], with Israel's 15-year-old wife, Susan. Israel Tuttle, age 24 and Susan H. York[8], age 13 were married on February 7, 1867 in Brighton. Also in the household is their 1-year old daughter Lucinda Tuttle[9]. Israel Tuttle next married Caroline Wyman[10] in 1878.

In the 1880 Census, Henrietta has aged only one year and is now listed as being born in 1870. On April 17, 1885 in Brighton, Henrietta Smart married Fred A. Wentworth[11]. Their son, Fred "Freddie" A. Wentworth[12] was born in Brighton three years before their marriage. Freddie died at age seven. Henrietta "Etta" (Smart) Wentworth died at age 98, outliving her husband Fred and five of her seven children.

Julia Tuttle was the daughter of Asa Tuttle[13] and Olive V. York[14], who were married on December 3, 1838 in Brighton. Julia Tuttle's first husband, John S. Smart was the son of Betsey (Tuttle) Smart and Julia Tuttle's father, Asa Tuttle was Betsey Smart's brother.

The parents of Asa, Betsey and Cynthia Tuttle were James Tuttle[15] and Patience Corson[16] who were married on June 16, 1808 in Athens and had eight children: Nathan Tuttle[17] who married Matilda Berry[18], James Tuttle, Jr.[19] who married Hannah Berry[20], Silas Tuttle[21] who married Catherine Decoster[22], Susan Tuttle[23] who married Jeremiah Brown[24] on September 20, 1840 and George Washington Tuttle[25] who married Eunice W. York[26] on April 19, 1839.

Julia Tuttle and John Smart separated before 1870 and divorced before July 1876. Julia (Tuttle) Smart next married Ansel F. Corson[27] on January 12, 1877 in Brighton. Ansel Corson and Julia Tuttle divorced and she then married Clarence Hodgdon[28]. The daughter of Clarence Hodgsdon (sic) and Julia Tuttle, Alma E. Hodgsdon[29] died in Brighton of "Consumption" at age 12.

Julia A. (Tuttle) Corson Hodgdon died at age 56 of "Cancer of Bowels" in Canaan, Maine. Her husband, Clarence Hodgdon died of "Carcinoma of Prostate Gland" in Bingham, Maine. He was 67.

Julia Tuttle's second husband, Ansel Corson was a descendant of Lemuel Corson[30] and Patience Perkins[31], who were also the common ancestors for Julia A. Tuttle, John S. Smart and Emeline Berry. They were all cousins to some degree.

John S. Smart was the son of John S. Smart[32] and Betsey H. Tuttle[33] who were married in Brighton on October 20, 1844 by "Justice of the Peace" Daniel Jones of Brighton.

Emeline Berry was the daughter of Isaac C. Berry[34] and Cynthia Tuttle[35] who were married on July 2, 1829 in Brighton Plantation, ME.

John S. Smart and Emeline (Berry) Smart had three children: Louisa Smart[36], John Sylvester Smart, Jr.[37] and Emeline Smart. Louisa Smart and John S. Smart Jr. never married or had any children.

In 1880, in Athens, John S. and Emmeline Smart, both age 31 are living with her mother, Cynthia Berry, age 71. John's occupation is "Teamster". During the 1890 Civil War Veterans enumeration, John Smart is now living in Brighton. John Sylvester Smart had been in the Union Army with the rank of Private in Company L of the Maine Volunteers, 19th Regiment.

In 1900 and 1910 the Smart family is living in Bingham Town & Brighton Plantation, Maine. In 1900, Cyntha (sic) Berry, age 91, is in the household with John S. Smart age 54, his wife Emeline, age 51 and their children Louisa age 18, John Jr., age 16 and Emeline Smart, age 12.

Cynthia (Tuttle) Berry died about two years later in Brighton at the age of 93. Cynthia was known as Sinthey at her birth on Brighton Plantation to James Tuttle and Patience Corson.

In the 1910 Census, the Smart family is enumerated as John D. Smart, Sr. age 64, his wife, Emmaline (sic) age 62, their adult children Louisa age 26, John D., Jr. age 25 and Emmaline (sic) Smart, age 21.

On September 10, 1918, at the age of 30, Emeline Smart married 17-year-old Seth O. Whiting in Athens. Their son William Henry Smart Whiting was born in Brighton that next year.

In 1920, Emeline, age 30 and Seth Whiting, age 18 live with her parents John S. and Emeline Smart, both 73, with Lovisa (sic) age 36 and John Smart, Jr. age 35, in Brighton. Also in the household is William H. Whiting[38], age 0, son of Emeline and Seth Whiting.

Seth and Emeline Whiting's second child, daughter Elnora Whiting[39] would be stillborn about a year later in Athens. Emeline Whiting had begun to suffer from a kidney ailment and this probably contributed to the tragic outcome of this pregnancy.

Emeline (Smart) Whiting died at age 33 in Athens of "Bright's Disease Puerperal"[40], only two months after the stillbirth of her daughter Elnora. Emeline (Smart) Whiting left her parents, a brother, a sister, a young husband and an infant son.

Seth O'Dell Whiting[41] was born in Wellington, Maine, the son of Seth L. Whiting[42] and Vidella M. (Cook)[43] Hunt. Seth O'Dell was the second child of Vidella M. Cook, who had daughter Gladys Mabel Hunt[44], also born in Wellington. Gladys was the child of Perly R. Hunt[45].

In 1930, Seth O. Whiting, age 29, widowed, general farm laborer, lives alone and spends $4 a month on rent in Madison, Maine. In 1930, Seth Whiting's son, William is known as William H. Whitney, age 10, "Nephew", living with his aunt Lowizia (sic) Smart, age 47 in Athens. Also in the household are two "Boarders", Earle M. Corson[46], age 17 and his sister, Cynthia M. Corson[47], age 23. Centhy (sic) Corson soon married Ezra Palma Brown[48] on June 30, 1930 in Athens.

In the 1940 Census, in the household of Louisa Smart, age 58 in Athens, listed as her nephew, is William H. S. Whiting, age 20. Velma B. Knights[49], age 17, "single" is employed as a housekeeper in the household of Louisa. The daughter of Velma Knights and William Whiting, Joyce M. Whiting[50], age 1 is also living there.

On March 17, 1941, more than two years after their daughter Joyce's birth, William H. Whiting married Velma B. Knights. Their son William Odell Whiting[51] was born in Athens late that year.

The next record for William H. Whiting indicates that he has enlisted on June 24, 1944 for Military Service in the Army at Fort Devens in Massachusetts for the duration of WWII. He is married, has a Grammar School Education and is a farm hand in civilian life.

After Emmeline Whiting's death in 1921, Seth O. Whiting would wait nearly 10 years to marry again in Athens on March 22, 1931 to Myrtle V. Willey[52]. After Myrtle's death, Seth O. Whiting, age 47, married Gladys E. Smith[53] on her 40th birthday, February 14, 1957. Gladys S. Whiting died in Waterville, Maine at the age of 59.

Seth O'Dell Whiting died in Skowhegan, Maine. He is buried with his second wife Myrtle Victoria "Myrtie" (Willey) Whiting and third wife Gladys E. (Smith) Whiting in Sunset Cemetery in North Anson, Maine.

Emmeline (Smart) Whiting was the only one of her siblings to marry and have children. By 1930, Emeline's brother John Smart, Jr. would be an inmate in the Bangor State Hospital. He remained there in 1940, where he is listed as single, age 54, with a 2nd grade education.

John Sylvester Smart, Jr. is probably buried with thousands of others in unmarked graves on the grounds of what is now the "Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center" in Bangor, Maine.

It is unclear what may have happened to Emmeline's older sister Louisa, who appears to have raised her nephew, William H. S. Whiting single-handedly. Louisa also gave a home to him, his young wife, Velma and their baby, while still employing Velma as a housekeeper.

There is no record for a marriage for Louisa Smart, but in 1940, she shows her marital status as "Widowed", age 58. In 1920 she is known as Lovisa Smart, age 36 and "Single". The 1930 Census shows her as Lowizia Smart, "Single", age 47, with her nephew William H. Whitney (sic), age 10 in her household. Where did she go, I wonder?
