As death records weren't legally required before 1892 in Maine, how else can you find when people died if you can't find a gravestone?

Deaths were sometimes recorded by towns and cities, though not as consistently as they were after 1892. You can also check local newspapers for death notices, and probate records. Church records are often hard to find, though Catholic parishes usually kept careful records of burials.
