Have been trying for years to find my gggrandfather John Deignan, a soldier, NOT stationed in Hancock Bks. His Banns of marrieage were in St. Marys in Houlton, in 1845. He married a young woman Mary Durnin, a widow, maiden name Means. Church records say that she was a member of St. Mary's. My Ggrandfather was John Wellington Deignan.
Inasmuch as I am 86 years old and am unable to travel my only recourse in in writing or calling. I contacted St. Mary's and the Parish Priest said that they had also listed a son, which was my grandfather John W. However when I called back they couldn't find that information. If anyone could suggest any other recourse I would be so grateful. I've been doing this work for 40 years, and would like to find out if John W's father did come from France as the 1880 census cites Also, that Mary, John's mother's name could have been Catherine Mary, or reverse. A grateful heart!! Dianne Deignan Arthur
