Hooper Island now Hupper Island

Does anyone know why the former Hooper Island, in Port Clyde, is now called Hupper Island?

According to the USGS, the island was "Purchased in 1852 by John Hupper, Jr." They do, though, give "Hooper Island" as a variant name.
