I'm seeking information about the sailing activities, cause of death, and place of burial for Capt. Harvey Dingley. His death notices, published Aug 16, 1829 in the American Advocate and Aug 18, 1829 in the Eastern Argus, gave very little information:
AMERICAN ADVOCATE: “Deaths… In this town, aged 30, Harvey Dingley, master of the brig Washington Recently from a southern voyage.”
EASTERN ARGUS: “DEATHS… In Hallowell, Capt. Harvey Dingley, aged 30.”
SUMMARY OF VITAL INFORMATION:
(Capt.) Harvey Dingley, born Aug 31, 1796/7 in Marshfield, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts [VITAL RECORDS OF MARSHFIELD MASS; NOTE: HIS BIRTH ALSO REPORTED IN VITAL RECORDS OF HALLOWELL, ME]; died Aug 7, 1829 in Hallowell, Kennebec Co., Maine at age 32 years [VITAL RECORDS OF HALLOWELL, MAINE….; DEATH NOTICES IN EASTERN ARGUS; THE AMERICAN ADVOCATE REPORTED HIS AGE AS 30 YRS, BUT BIRTH RECORD INDICATES 32 YRS]. He was the son of Jabez Dingley and Selah Peterson. He married Henrietta Besse Sunday evening, Oct 26, 1822 in Hallowell, Kennebec Co., Maine [MAINE MARRIAGES ; THE AMERICAN ADVOCATE (MARRIAGE NOTICE); DISCREPANCY NOTE: DIGITIZED IMAGE OF MARRIAGE RECORD INFORMATION INDICATED INTENTIONS FILED OCT 26, 1822 AND MARRIAGE DATE NOV 10, 1822].
He was buried in Village Cemetery in Hallowell. The Maine Old Cemetery Association gives these transcriptions of stones in his lot:
Dingley, Capt. Harvey [Our Father], d. 7 Aug 1829, aged 32 yrs.
Henrietta D. Collins [Our Mother], former wife of Capt. Harvey Dingley, d. 23 Sep 1863, aged 63 yrs.
Mary F. Collins, d. 7 June 1875, aged 30 yrs.
Celia Collins [no dates].
This is the first time I've seen burial information. Now, I'll keep searching for documentation regarding Capt. Dingley's maritime occupation and his cause of death. I really appreciate your help!! Jean D.
