from the mid 1760's through the Revolutionary War my 6th Great Grandfather - Israel Davis - was a merchant and Captain in the Revolutionary War. he was charged with defending the seacoast and was the largest taxpayer in Boothbay.  But this is about all I know.

Is there a place that may have further information of this period? I believe he ended up being incharge of troops - as one of the first Marines - on a ship in the Revolution. But I sure would like to find more info.

Any suggestions of where to look?

I have searched Ancestry, FS, NEHGS, google ;).... and am not new to this search but...figure that some of you may have already invented this wheel    ;)

You might try the Massachusetts Colonial Archives in the Sec.of State's office.  Before and during American Revolution and War of 1812 all colonial naval and military units were Massachusetts Militia or Massachusetts Militia or Naval units of the Continental Army.  Another source may be the New Hampshire Colonial archives.  Many  Maine seamen served aboard New Hampshire vessels in those times also.

Good luck and let us know if you find anything.
