Door, Doore, Dore, Dorr names

Many of the "Door's" found in Maine and New Hampshire may very well be descended from Richard Door of Portsmouth, NH. Before the early 1800's it was commonly spelled Door in the early sources - sometime after 1800 more common spelling changed to Dore, Doar, Dorr, or Doore; few families in the Maine/New Hampshire area kept Door.

My own GGG grandfather Joel Door was married (to Hannah Hussey) in Shapleigh, ME in 1800 as Door, moved north to Harmony, ME where the town record used Doore…

Connecting Joel Doore of Atkinson, ME to James Dore of Athens, ME

Due to a lack of written records, the parents of my known ancestor, Joel Doore, who moved to the Dover-Foxcroft area in 1811, have not been positively established.

Laura Mabel Doore Warren (“Aunt Lottie” 1865 – 1966 – great granddaughter of Joel Doore) provided a record of the family of Joel Doore, a handwritten manuscript (circa 1938) in the files of the Thompson Free Library in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.

Aunt Lottie relates the Doore family…
