Hello Ed,
Can't help with you family but was wondering how confident you are are on the spelling?
I have a Guptail in my list and have seen it spelled Gubtell also. My group were from Berwick.

Ed, I've written a note on my member page, but will repeat it here. I have info as to why a Robert Hallowell changed his name to Gardiner. Perhaps your Guptil or Winslow was related to some descendant of Robert, somehow ,and thus were also able to change their name to Gardiner. Just a thought. If you would like to see the info, I would be happy to e-mail it to you, if you would like to contact me at cynmc2@cox.net.

Not sure if this is the same guptill family, But here is something from the history of Kennebec County Page 562

that may pertain to your families?
