Actress Jennifer Aniston's maternal grandfather was a native of Aroostook County.

Jennifer Joanne Aniston is the daughter of John Anthony Aniston (born Ioannis Antonio Anastassakis in Chaniá, Crete) and Nancy Ellen Dow. Her mother was born in New York City, the daughter of Gordon McLean Dow and Louise M. Grieco.

Gordon McLean Dow, the son of Francis Dow and Sarah Ellen McLean, was born 2 Feb. 1908 in Houlton, Maine, according to his birth record at the Maine State Archives. He attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he studied electrical engineering and was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity. He is listed in the school's yearbooks as a freshman in 1928, a sophomore in 1929, but the 1930 census found him serving with Battery K, 11th Coast Artillery Regiment, at Fort H. G. Wright on Fishers Island, New York. He married Louise M. Grieco, whose Albanian-American father was a barber on Fishers Island. They were divorced 1951 in Polk County, Florida. Gordon died in November 1977.

Gordon's father, Francis Dow, was born in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, the son of Scottish immigrant James Dow and Katherine Stewart. Gordon's mother, Sarah Ellen McLean, was born in St. Francis, Maine, the daughter of Neil McLean and Mary Henderson. With the exception of his lines through grandmother Mary Henderson—whose ancestors reportedly lived in York and Massachusetts—all of Gordon McLean's ancestry was of relatively recent Scottish origin.
