Nettina May Dakin[2] was born in Wilton, Maine, the daughter of Wallace Clarence Dakin[3] and Beulah May Wilson[4], who were married in Carthage, Maine on April 21, 1902 and had four children born in Wilton.

In 1900, Wallace C. Dakin 24, Farm Laborer, is living in Wilton with his mother, Frances L. Reed 53 and her 2nd husband, Horace Reed[5] 52. Wallace C. Dakin’s father, Joel Bowen Dakin[6] had died at the age of 41.

After the death of Joel B. Dakin, in 1880, his widow, Frances L. Dakin 37, her children Edwin Dakin[7] 20, Charles Dakin[8] 19, Ella M. Dakin[9] 14 and Wallace Dakin 4, were all living in Wilton with her father-in-law, Bowen Dakin 71. Bowen Dakin is a Tinker and is Divorced.

Wallace Dakin’s mother, Frances Louise Knowles[10] was the daughter of Ezekiel Knowles[11] and Mary Young[12]. Frances L. Knowles 15, married Joel Bowen Dakin 27, on November 25, 1858 in Temple, Maine.

The four children of Wallace C. Dakin and Beulah M. Wilson: Lester H. Dakin[13], Leman Clarence Dakin[14], Nettina May Dakin and Gladys L. (Dakin[15]) Tetreault.

In 1910, Wallace C. Dakin 34, Beulah M. Dakin 26, Lester H. Dakin 4, Leman C. Dakin 2 and Nettina M. Dakin 1 are residing in Wilton. Wallace Dakin is employed as a Laborer in a Livery Stable.

In 1920, Wallis [sic] C. Dakin 43, Beulah M. Dakin 35, Lester H. Dakin 14, Leman C. Dakin 12, Nettiner [sic] Dakin 11 and Gladys L. Dakin 7, all live in Wilton, where Wallace’s occupation is as House Carpenter.

Wallace and Beulah Dakin divorced after 1920, but continued to live together in 1930 and 1940, with their daughter Gladys L. Dakin 17, in 1930 and in 1940, after Gladys’ marriage to George F. Tetreault[16].

Gladys L. Dakin married Wilfred A. Leavitt on March 2, 1931 and they had a son, Norman L. Leavitt[17], born 5 months later. Wilford [sic] A. Leavitt 18, a Soldier, with the rank of Private, was stationed at Fort William McKinley on Great Diamond Island, Casco Bay, Maine in 1930.

Wilfred Alexander Leavitt[18] was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, the son of Henry Otis Leavitt and Mary E. Legault, who were married there on June 3, 1907 and had seven children: Raymond O. Leavitt[19], Lorraine Mary (Leavitt[20]) Meloa, Wilfred Alexander Leavitt; Louis Henry Leavitt[21] and Thomas Leo Leavitt[22], who both died as infants; Helen F. (Leavitt[23]) Tibbetts and Rita Rose (Leavitt[24]) Rondeau-Bennett.

In 1920, Henry O. Leavitt 31 and his wife, Mary E. Leavitt 32, live in Plaistow, New Hampshire, with their five children: Rita R. Leavitt 0, Helen F. Leavitt 6, Wilfred A. Leavitt 7, Lorraine M. Leavitt 9 and Raymond O. Leavitt 11. Henry O. Leavitt works as a Crossing Tender for the Steam Railroad, during this Census.

Gladys L. Dakin and Wilfred A. Leavitt divorced and he married again to a woman named Mary, they had five children: Eva, Florance, Frederick, Edwin and Gail Leavitt[25], given up for adoption in 1968.

Gladys L. Dakin married George F. Tetreault on April 13, 1935, in Wilton. George F. and Gladys Tetreault had a son, born after nearly 15 years of marriage, whom they named, Gary A. Tetreault[26].

Gary A. Tetreault died in Lewiston, Maine at the age of 39. He left his widow, Gale E. (Bubier) Tetreault, whom he married on September 2, 1978, in Wilton. Gary also left his mother, Gladys L. (Dakin) Leavitt Tetreault and a half-brother, Norman L. Leavitt, of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nettina May Dakin was first married to Lester Albra Dalrymple[27] on June 29, 1922 in Vermont, when the bride was 13 and the groom was 31. They had three children together before they divorced.

The children of Lester A. Dalrymple and Nettina M. Dakin are: Myrtle Leona Dalrymple[28], who married Carl C. Thompson, Jr. on July 4, 1940 in Wilton and married her second husband, Walter N. Small on November 21, 1955 in Portland; Catherine Louise Dalrymple[29], who married Verne L. Merrow[30] on December 13, 1941, they divorced; Lloyd A. Dalrymple[31] and Lawrence Earl Dalrymple[32]

Lawrence Dalrymaple [sic], age 9 lives with his father Lester, age 48 and grandfather Jason, age 82 during the 1940 Census in Sutton, New Hampshire.  Louise C. and Lloyd Dalrymple live with step-father, Roy E. Farmer and mother, Nettie M. Farmer in Wilton, in 1940.

This was a third marriage for Nettina May Dakin, who had a seven-year-old daughter, Marlene T. Farmer[33], from her second marriage to Roy Edwin Farmer[34] on June 2, 1934 in Wilton, Maine.

Roy E. Farmer, his wife Nettie M. Farmer and their daughter, Marlene C. Farmer live in Wilton in 1940. Also, in the household are Nettina’s children from a previous marriage to Lester Dalrymple in 1922: Louise C. Dalrymple 15 and Lloyd A. Dalrymple 13.

Marlene T. Farmer married three times in Portland, Maine.  Her first marriage, when she was only 16, was to Robert K. Field[35] on May 12, 1952.  Second marriage was to George R. Fossett on February 15, 1954 and third time to Richard M. Gramlich[36] on October 30, 1957.

Nettina and Everett Safford divorced less than 5 years after their marriage in an ugly and very public manner.  An article appeared in "The Portland Press Herald" on January 10, 1947 detailing the grounds for that divorce.  Luckily, they had no children together.

Transcribed verbatim: "Everett R. Safford, East New Portland would leave for work but get intoxicated instead, Nettina M. Safford, of Portland declared. After he left the shipyard here, he'd go away on three or four-week binges and come back broke and dirty, she said. She had to run a rooming house here to support herself she said. They were married at Gorham July 23, 1942."

Nettina M. Dakin married for a fourth time to a WWII, Korea and Vietnam War Veteran, SP3 Burton H. Thompson[37] on July 28, 1948. It is a second marriage for Burton Thompson.

On April 27, 1942, Burton H. Thompson enlisted in the military at Portland. He is single, with the civilian occupation in construction as a semi-skilled cranemen, derrickmen, hoistmen and shovelmen. Burton H. Thompson was first married to Mary E. Doody[38] on February 17, 1945 in Portland, Maine, soon after his return from WWII.

Nettina Dakin also had 3 other children from her first husband, Lester Albra Dalrymple[39]. They were married on June 29, 1922 in Hartland, Vermont, when Nettina was 13 years old and Lester was 31.

The children of Lester and Nettina Dalrymple are: Myrtle Leona Dalrymple[40], born when Nettina was 14; Catherine Louise Dalrymple[41] Merrow, Lloyd A. Dalrymple[42] and Lawrence Earl Dalrymple[43]

By 1930, the Lestir [sic] A. Dalrymple family are living in Wilton and include: Lestir A. Dalrymple 38, Nettie M. Dalrymple 22, Myrtle L. Dalrymple 6, Katherine L. Dalrymple 4, Lloyd A. Dalrymple 2 and Laurence E. Dalrymple, age 1.

On July 4, 1940, a 17-year-old, Myrtle L. Dalrymple, married Carl C. Thompson, Jr.[44] 21, in Wilton. Myrtle was already pregnant with their son, Carl Crafts Thompson III[45], who was born 7 months later. Myrtle and Carl divorced and she, Myrtle L. Dalrymple or Myrtle L. Thompson, resident of Portland, Maine, married again, on November 21, 1955 in Maine, to Walter N. Small[46], a resident of Boston, Massachusetts.

Myrtle L. Small died at age 60 and is buried in Proctor Cemetery in Andover, New Hampshire, with her son, Carl Crafts Thompson III and her “SPECIAL FRIEND”, Ernest Blake[47], a WWII Veteran.

During the 1940 Census in Sutton, New Hampshire, Lawrence Dalrymaple [sic] age 9, lives with his father, Lester Dalrymaple 48 and grandfather, Jason Dalrymaple[48] 82 (Lester’s widowed father).

Lester A. Dalrymple married Earline Eva Blake[49] Wood and they had two sons: Ronald W. Man Darlymple[50] and Dale B. Dalrymple.

The other children of Nettina and Lester, Louise C. Dalrymple 15 and Lloyd Dalrymple 13, live with their mother “Nettie” 31 and step-father Roy E. Farmer 42, in Wilton in 1940. Roy and Nettie’s daughter, Marlene C. Farmer 4, complete the household.

Nettina Dakin would marry for a fourth time to Burton H. Thompson[51] on July 28, 1948. Nettina (Dakin) Dalrymple Farmer Safford Thompson died in South Portland, Maine and is buried with her fourth husband in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Nettina was 74.
