Hello! I am searching for information on John Gilley (not the Maine farmer and fisherman) as far as his decendants as well as any "proof" that he came from Ireland and in what year. Any help would be great!
Thanks!

Hi Sarah, I'd be glad to search around a bit if you're still looking, but if so, do you have any other info? Children? Wife? Approximate age at a certain time? And if not a farmer or mariner, than any other occupation? Let me know if you're still looking for help and any info you can provide. Thanks.

That would be great! Thanks for offering!
I don't have any proof, or documentation, but he married Dorcus Braun (Brawn) and lived in Hallowell, Maine. He worked at Fort Western (some are claiming that he came over in the year that he started working but I don't have any information that leads me to say that) in about 1756. The biggest problem (besides Ireland!) that I'm working on right now is trying to link what I think to be his last three children to him. I do find him in microfilm records as having 7 other children, but these last three were born after Hallowell broke apart. Isaac Foster is the one I'm searching to connect to him, and he would've been born about 1786. Thanks - I'm anxious to hear what you find!

Age - John was born in the late 1600's and died in 1813 - he was 124. Crazy, but it's supposedly been proven!

Hi Sarah. After looking a bit at John Gilley himself, I doubt I can offer anything on him specifically since he's pretty well researched and kinda famous (Ripley's, etc). Have you looked at all of the info that others have done? There are a number of well documented websites that deal directly with him, his post emigration family, etc. I think it's pretty well documented that he came from Ireland, in his own words, but being so far back in the early 1700's I doubt you'll find actual "proof" of his crossing to America. I'll keep looking into the three children and Issac Foster, and will let you know if I find anything that links him. Do you have any idea how "Foster" would be his last name if he's the son of John Gilley?

Nevermind, I see. It's Isaac Foster Gilley. Will look and see if anything can be found, as well as for Dermont and Abigail (I assume those are the three?).

Yes - they are. Thank you for looking into that - I am very thankful!

Just wondering if anyone has any other ideas for searching!

His previous children (exempting the last three) may be in Hallowell records, because of the town spilt. Any idea how I might be able to acsess those from a distance?
Thanks again!
