STORM BEACH COTTAGE - GEORGE B. DORR'S FINAL HOME

STORM BEACH COTTAGE - ACADIA NATIONAL PARK

Oldfarm was the name of the George B. Dorr estate, located on the grounds of Compass Harbor.  Dorr was the first superintend of Acadia National Park, and it was his vision and deep pockets that helped the National Park here come to be.  His estate, Oldfarm, was conveyed to the National Park and within ten years the Park Service had it torn down, a move many consider a huge blunder as the estate could have easily been converted into housing for Park Staff or even a museum.
When Mr. Dorr gave the estate to the Park Service, he moved into a guest house he owned nearby, named Storm Beach Cottage, where he spent the remaining years of his life.  Many today refer to Mr. Dorr as being the Father of Acadia National Park.

The guest cottage was constructed in 1879, and the structure is still in use today by the National Park Service and serves as housing for park personal.  The cottage is located along the Oldfarm Road, just past the Compass Harbor unmarked parking lot along route 3,

Storm Beach Cottage, much like the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, is owned by the Government - this home is considered a private residence even though it is owned by the government.  The privacy of those renting the cottage should be respected, as the house IS NOT open to the public.
