THE MARRIAGE OF PHILIP JOHN WEST AND CLARA FORD (ELLINGWOOD) TIDWELL

Last week I had success finding information on my mother's

family at FamilySearch Record Search and since then I've

gone back and tried looking up other family members. This

morning I entered my great grandfather Philip John West's

name in the search box and Maine as a location. I was

hoping to find a record of his marriage to my great

grandmother Clara (Ellingwood) Tidwell. but apparently my

streak of genealogy luck was at an end. Then on a hunch

I tried New Hampshire as a location, since both the West

and Ellingwood families moved back and forth from one

state to the other.

And my streak of luck continued!

The first three entries on the screen were from the New Hampshire

Marriages 1720-1920 collection and all were transcriptions of my

great grandparents' marriage.

Up until now I hadn't found the date and place of PJ and Clara's

marriage anywhere online so I'd put it aside to possibly be looked into

on a trip up north or perhaps an inquiry to the New Hampshire Vital

records site. Now the information from these transcriptions to order

a copy of the actual marriage record!

One of the things I noticed about all three transcriptions are the mistakes

on the names. Clara's father Asa Freeman Ellingwood sometimes

went by the name Freeman Ellingwood but in the first two transcriptions

he's listed as Truman and Trueman. And poor Clara! All three have her

name from her first marriage wrong, Instead of Tidwell, it's Tigwell,

Tygwell and in the second she's Cora Tywell! How do I notify Family

Search Record Search about those mistakes?

So I'm still on a lucky roll, genealogically speaking!

Hi, Bill,
Clara's brother Joseph was my great grandfather!!! I believe the errors may have come from the inability to read the handwriting of whomever was transcribing the records. I have no idea what proof you would need to get the records changed - possibly a certified copy of the original document but it would certainly be worth the effort to correct the information. Here's an interesting fact - my father's grandfather was Clara's brother Joseph. My mother's grandmother was Charles Tidswell's 3rd wife!!!! I would also question the marriage date of 1894 since your grandfather's dob was nearly a year before their marriage date. Were you ever able to purchase a copy of Florence O'Connor's book "Ellingwood and Dunham"?

Hi Cousin! Wow..I knew Charles remarried once but didn't know about the third wife!. The question of my granddad's DOB is one I've discussed with our Cousin Chris Dunham and I think it might have something to do with the divorce between Charles and Clara.
Yes, I have a copy of Florence O'Connor's book and have been slowly adding names to my database. Have you ever attended the Ellingwood Family Reunion for the descendants of Asa and Florilla Dunham Ellingwood? I was there last year but won't be able to make it this year.

Another cousin!!! Charles' third wife was Nellie Forbes (my paternal great grandmother). i guess he was quite the charmer!! They always lived in the Upton area and a historical society was just recently established there. Chris Dunham - how is he related? Florence didn't name him in her book.
I lived in southern Vermont all of my adult life and last summer moved back to Newry where my family lives (Lowells) so am slowly meeting relatives. I just met Ina Grover (Clara's niece - reference page 128) in the grocery store!!! She mentioned the Ellingwood reunion to be held at her grandson's and most in attendance are her side of the family. My father who is 87 wants me to take him this year.
The LDS Pilot website has a lot of information including original docutments. There is more information to be entered but it's so nice to be able to look at the original census' and birth records without having to pay a subscription fee.

Chris is a descendant of one of Florilla Dunham's brothers. I found the reference to Nellie Forbes in Florence's book last night after reading your original comment
.
If you are on Facebook there's an Ellingwood Reunion page there with all the information as to time and place but if you aren't I can get the information to you. I'm on Facebook as Bill West from Abington, Ma.

Yes, the LDS site is great! I've found information there recently about my Mom's side of the family that I never knew but that's posted at my "West in New England" blog at http://westinnewengland.blogspot.com/.

Your blog is great - lots of info to go through. I did find the Ellingwood Reunion info on Facebook.

I've looked for many years for information on Nellie Forbes family (Ross) as well as the Forbes. I knew they were originally from Scotland and came to Nova Scotia but have never been able to find anything on them. Finally last year Nova Scotia released census records and there they were!!!!! People who don't do genealogy have no idea the feeling you get when you find the person you've been desperately seeking for a very long time!!! There is so much opening up on the internet know that most research can be done at the computer. There are lots of town histories and vital records on Google books!!!!

At present I am volunteering at the Bethel Historical research library. Love it - plus in a free moment I can work on my own research.

Boy, that's a genealogist's dream job, Mary! Are there any Massachusetts roots to the Nova Scotia
Forbes? I have Forbes ancestors from Plymouth County here. Maybe a Royalist or two moved to NS after the Revolution!

I'm afraid there are no Massachusetts roots to the Nova Scotia Forbes. I believe the parents (both Ross and Forbes) were sent to NS during the Highland Clearances. Free access to Scotland vitals are becoming available but Ross and Forbes over there are like Smith over here!!!
